FRIDAY, MAY 16TH AT SAMMONS GOLF LINKS

The Annual TABA Golf Tournament is scheduled for Friday, May 16th at Sammons Golf Links in Temple.  This tournament was orginally scheduled for Thursday, May 15th but due to a meeting conflict, the golf committee chose to move it back one day to accomodate those that want to play but had a prior committment.  Sponsors are being rounded up and so are teams.  A golf entry form is below.

If you wish to participate please print this page and fill out the entry form.  Fax it back to us at 254-774-7273 and we will see you on the course around 12:00 for check-in.  The annual tournament is always a fun and competitive event that provides for a great day with plenty to eat and drink for all.  We are experimenting with the way we distribute our prizes so check out which place teams will be awarded prizes for their efforts.

If you wish to sponsor the tournament and have not yet been contacted, please contact us as soon as possible.  Sponsorships are available for $100 for a hole sponsor and $250 for a tee box sponsor.  Tee box sponsorships are exclusive and the sponsor does have the option to set up a table at their assigned tee box to display their wares or proved 'give aways'.  Call today as space is limited.

As I write, only three days have passed since the April whirlwind of events we call the Parade of Homes wrapped up, and the preliminary reports are looking good.  This year, the whirlwind description seems to be more accurate than ever before.  Friday night’s Barbeque and Awards presentation was almost washed out due to wild central Texas weather.  With tornado sirens blaring, hail, rain and howling winds, those of us who arrived early were wondering whether anyone would bother to show up.  But in true TABA style, the faithful slowly trickled in for an evening of good food, fellowship, entertainment, and recognition of their efforts.
Congratulations to all the winners!

The 2008 Parade will be remembered for its quantity and quality.  With 19 homes there truly was something for everyone.  This year also featured more luxury homes than usual.  The TABA builders really pulled out all the stops in this category.  The judges were impressed with the features and quality of construction and the parade visitors I spoke to seemed to be enjoying every minute.

Events of this magnitude don’t just happen, and I’d like to say thank you to Parade Chairman Justin Scott and all of his committee members for a job well done.  Executive Officer Cheryl Copeland and the committee started working on the Parade details months ago and the results of all their hard work were on display for two full weekends.  The Parade and the barbeque went off without a hitch.  Thanks again Cheryl, Justin and committee members!

May is upon us and that can only mean one thing…golf tournament time.  Make sure you get your team signed up, breakout the shorts, dust off the clubs and join us at Sammons on Friday, May 16th for a great time and lots of prizes.  I’ll see you there but I promise I won’t get near a golf club!

Temple Passes Masonry Ordinance
During the hearings on the masonry ordinance positive and negative view points were expressed.  Though the staff and stakeholders presented a draft that was well deliberated, it became obvious that many thought the ordinance to be too far-reaching.  The P&Z and Council both considered, but did not pass, proposed amendments that would have reduced the reach of the ordinance, and would have left it to impact only the major corridors in the city.  What they ended up passing was an ordinance that affects facade decisions for new development throughout the City with the exception of some uses, zoning districts (ag and residential), and defined locations in the city.

It remains to be seen whether the governing bodies made the right decision.  TABA will be working with our realtors, suppliers and developers over the next year to try to determine if any business people decide not to “Choose Temple
” due to the need to conform to the newest City development regulation on the books.

I’m more convinced than ever of the significance of being involved in the rule-making process now that the Temple Council and Planning & Zoning Commission have heard public testimony surrounding the masonry ordinance.  Though the ordinance is not perfect, it includes a variety of sections that likely wouldn’t have been considered without stakeholder involvement.

Almost as if scripted, an example of the forethought that went into the ordinance came about at the Council meeting that followed the meeting in which the ordinance passed.  One of the sections that the stakeholders included in the ordinance was a provision that gives the City staff the ability to add to the approved materials list on an ongoing basis.  Materials on this list can be used by right on any new building facade without City approval.

At the meeting, a zoning hearing took place in which the Council considered and approved a storage facility on one of the major corridors in Temple.  The applicant volunteered to use a product on the full exterior façade that imitates stucco in look and feel.  When asked by Council what the difference in cost would be to her overall project, the applicant testified that there would be little to no difference in the price of the product as compared to metal.

I believe this is a good indication that the development community will adapt to the City’s call for more stringent façade standards.  I think it’ll be a positive indication of the City’s intent to be equally willing to adapt if they’ll quickly add this new product to the approved materials list.

TRCC Third Party Inspections
I’ve tweaked the following memo that I received from the Texas Association of Builders (TAB) earlier this month.

The TRCC recently placed its “County Inspection Instructions and Form” on its website in order to elicit comments.  This form, which can be viewed by
clicking here, is to be utilized by the 3rd party inspector to inspect homes in areas without municipal inspections, as mandated by HB 1038 from last session.  Comments will be reviewed by the TRCC in order to determine what changes, if any, should be made before the documents become final.

Please get any comments you have to me by Friday, May 16.  I’ll get your comments to TAB for possible inclusion into their formal comments package, which they’ll turn in by May 21st.  Alternatively, you may provide your comments directly to the TRCC by e-mail to: dora.rivera@trcc.state.tx.us, or in writing to: Dora Alicia Rivera, P.O. Box 13509, Austin, Texas 78711-3509.  Again, comments are due by May 21, 2008, but please get them to me by May 16 if you would like them incorporated into TAB’s formal comments.

For your information, the 3rd party inspection rules as adopted by the Commission can be accessed by clicking here.  Thank you for your continued participation in the regulatory process and thanks to the Texas Association of Builders for looking out for our industry at the state level.

TABA BBQ Cook-Off
Make Plans NOW

The TABA BBQ Cook-Off is scheduled for Friday, June 13th at the Overlook Pavilion at Lake Belton.  There are a few changes that will be implemented this year.  First some of the categories have changed.  We have eliminated the beans and dessert category and have added wild game and salsa.  The five categories are now brisket, ribs, chicken, wild game and salsa.  You may enter all five or any category that you choose.  The cost for a team entry is still $25 and gates will open at 7am.

Door prizes will be given out during the day to team members and the Membership Meetings & Sponsors committee are currently searching for door prizes with a monetary value of a minimum of $25.  If you have a door prize that you would like to donate, please contact the TABA office.  We also plan a washers tournament for the cookers that day.  The non-cooking members will be invited to attend and taste the delicious eats at 5:30 and judging will be taking place at 5:00pm.  Judges are still to be determined.
Prizes will again be awarded and this year we've put a new twist in for the winner.  The 1st place winner in each category will be given a full year's worth of bragging rights in the TABA video that runs continuously throughout the day at the TABA office and is often seen at membership meetings.

So let's get those recipes put together, gather your team and send in your entry for the 3rd Annual BBQ Cook-Off.

MEMBERSHIP IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY

At TABA, we always tout "our strength in numbers."  The more members we have the stronger and more effective we are as an organization.  The only way to increase our strength is to increase our numbers by increasing our membership.

Our membership is vital to our survival, our growth and our effectiveness in our mission--"To Promote and Enhance Home Ownership."  Every year TABA conducts a membership drive.  This is the one day where we focus on membership.  The TABA Board of Directors in their January board meeting appointed the date of the June board meeting to be that day.

All of your TABA officers and directors will be sitting in the TABA conference room working the phone lines to recruit new members to the TABA family.  This does not have to be just a board function however.  Every member can play an important role in our growth process.

If you would like to join the TABA board on June 11th at 10:00am, they would certainly love to have you; however it is not necessary that you be present at the TABA office.  You can still recruit from the comfort of your own office or truck.  Every member knows someone who should be a member.  Pick up the phone and ask them to join.

Membership is very affordable with Associate member dues at $345 and Builder member dues at $375 - it is an investment worth making.  TABA has made a concerted effort this year to focus on the "Benefits of Membership", below are a list of a few advantages to being a TABA member.

  • Fantastic Networking opportunities
  • Member only advertising advantages
  • Member discounts on national programs and with national companies
  • Exclusive member listings in our Membership directory and on our TABA Webpage
  • Deep discounts on the rental of the new TABA State-of-the-Art Facilities
  • Member only receipt of industry publications
  • Up to date information on new regulations
  • Quality education opportunities

These are just a few of the advantages that membership holds.  To join is easy!  Just click here for a membership application, fill it out and mail it in with the proper dues payment.  Membership begins almost immediately!  It's that easy.

If a prospect isn't sure about joining and would like to check us out first, bring them to an upcoming TABA function.  They are sure to get a good idea of what we are all about and what we have to offer.

Membership is everyone's responsibility.  Won't you help?  Just think of how much stronger we would be if every member recruited just one new member!

Summer is just around the corner and that means golf, bbq and the big Reverse Raffle.  As the heat rises, so does the fun.

The Annual TABA Golf Tournament is scheduled for Friday, May 16th at Sammons Golf Links.  Don't forget to sign your team up to play as space is limited.  A golf entry form can be found on the cover page of this month's newsletter.  Fill it out and fax it back to me or shoot me an email.

If cooking is your thing, don't forget the Annual TABA BBQ Cook-Off scheduled for Friday, June 13th.  This year we have added to the judging categories, which now include salsa and wild game.  It should be another great event.

The Reverse Raffle was such a huge success last year that it is coming back.  Scheduled for Friday, July 11th, the Reverse Raffle will again be held at the Knights of Columbus.  We will sell 50 more tickets than last year and the committee is still working on the prizes but there is expected to be an even more substantial prize package.  Keeping reading your newsletters for more information.

The Parade of Homes was a huge success and it is all due to our participating builders, their many subcontractors and suppliers and our great partners.  It is always a team effort when events such as these are produced and we truly appreciate everyone's support.

That's it from my desk.  Hope everyone is having a great year so far.  I know we are.

TABA Home-PAC News!!!

Home PAC would like to ask you to be sure to vote in your local elections and remind your family, friends, and business associates as well.  The Home PAC trustees received a number of calls to consider endorsements for local elections over the past month.  Among those considered and approved were:

As you can see, the above list only contains one Council candidate for your consideration.  The incumbents in the remaining Council districts in Temple and Belton that are up for election this year do not face any opposition.  The Village of Salado does have some contested races that our trustees were briefed about, but took no action on as we were not contacted by any of the candidates and do not have a history of getting involved in our smaller community races unless we are asked by the candidates or our members.

Today, May 6th, is the last day of Early Voting!  Election Day is May 10th.  To vote in the above races, please go to one of the following locations (between 7am and 7pm):
  • TISD elections, Fire Bond, Council District 2: Temple Municipal Building, 2 North Main
  • BISD: Administration Office, 6th Avenue (next door to Golden Chick)
  • Morgan’s Point: Municipal Building (8 Morgan’s Point Blvd)
