The Home PAC Skeet Shoot Has Arrived

The Lengefeld Lumber Company and a variety of other sponsors invite you to join us for the 4th Annual TABA Home PAC Skeet Shoot.  Teams and sponsors continue to sign up and we still have some space for you.

Our goal this year is to match the 116 shooters we had last year and we will work to achieve it until the August 24th deadline has come and gone.  If you desire to shoot, just fill out our
online form and fax it to us.  We hope you'll help us reach our goal of selling out our time slots and look forward to a very exciting shoot that will be fun and competitive.

The date of the shoot is Tuesday, August 25th.  There will be things going on most of the day that should be attractive to shooters and non-shooters alike.  These include door prize drawings in the afternoon; (and thanks to Carothers Executive Homes and Salado Pools) the availability of sausage wraps and other bbq throughout the afternoon; a brisket dinner during the awards banquet; horseshoes and washers; and a variety of shooting games that will be exciting to shooters and onlookers.

Further, after the awards ceremony, an auction will take place that should be enticing to most in our audience.  Numerous subcontractors and suppliers have provided items that should interest builders, sportsmen, and those in the market to do some improvements to their own home.

As with most Home PAC events some special guests will be among us.  Please plan to join us for as much of the event as you can attend.  Non-shooters will want to make a point to be in attendance by no later than 6 pm in order to participate in the meal and post-shoot activities.  Dinner costs for non-shooters will be $10 per plate, please rsvp by August 24th.

If you did not attend the TABA Reverse Raffle, you missed a great time.  A BIG round of applause to Kelly Hosch of First Community Title and her committee, as well as Cheryl, Troy, Lisa McKinnon, and the professional auctioneering of Eddy Lange.  Thank you to our sponsors, silent auction donors, and to Steve Wright for making the raffle board.  If you were there, you know that Jason Carothers and I held the final two tickets. In the end, I caved under the $$$$ pressure and sold my ticket.  Jason won second prize and JR Lester, who bought my ticket, won the truck!  We had a wonderful evening filled with excitement.

Skeet shooters mark your calendars.  The 4th Annual TABA Home PAC Skeet Shoot is scheduled for Tuesday, August 25th. Last year 116 shooters participated and we hope to have similar results this year.  Whether you participate in the shoot or not, we hope you’ll come out and enjoy the day with us.

We moved the August Fish Fry/Associate Member Appreciation event to Friday, October 2nd.  We are hosting a Bass Catch & Release Tournament at Temple Lake Park that morning, followed by the Fish Fry at noon.  Although there is an entry fee for the fishing tournament, the Fish Fry is free to all.  This is our first attempt at a fishing tournament and we hope that it will appeal to many of our members who may not normally participate in our skeet shoot or golf tournament.  The support of our builder and associate members is critical to making this event a success.  You can help TABA assure the success of this event by encouraging or even sponsoring the tournament entry fee of your employees who enjoy fishing.  What a great way to say “thank you” to them for their loyalty and hard work!

We are proud to welcome the following new members – C Corp Development, Chris Butler, Arrow Electric, Michael Casto, DEK Insulation, Daren Degner, Master Interiors, Joe Blackwell and Johnnie’s Office Systems, Adam Guillen.  We strongly encourage all of our members but especially our newest members to come and join us at our TABA events.  Networking is the biggest benefit we offer our members but it doesn’t work unless you make it work for you.  If you don’t shoot skeet then come join us for the dinner & auction afterwards beginning around 5pm.  If you don’t fish then come join us for the fish fry that begins around noon.  The opportunity is there you just have to make the effort to grab it.

If you are a current member whose renewal is coming up, we hope you know how important your continuing membership is to our association.  Your TABA staff and leadership are working hard to keep our association strong.  One of the most prominent things we’ve done for our membership over the past year is the implementation of the Buy Now marketing campaign.  In times as tough as we’ve seen in years, TABA proved its commitment to our members and our industry by crafting a marketing campaign valued at more than $45,000.  The campaign was designed to directly and indirectly help our membership with the ultimate goal to keep houses selling, builders building, and subs and suppliers working.  Using our own financial resources, leveraging our member relationships, and pooling the talents of our leaders, we attacked the “down market” head on when our members needed us most.

The point is…TABA is here for our members in the good times and the difficult times and we need you to remember us and support us now more than ever.  Please tell the people you do business with about TABA and encourage them to consider becoming a part of our family.  We will survive and come away from these times even stronger than we were before and our industry will be better for it.  As long as we are here, we are committed to supporting you.  We’re all in this together. Thank you for your membership.

TABA's Take on New Belton Standards

If you've been following this column, you'd know that TABA leadership has spent a considerable amount of time over the past six months working with the City of Belton on a document called the Belton Design Standards.  These new standards are billed as the guidelines builders will have to abide by when they do projects in the City and they impact everything from landscaping to roof pitch considerations.  These standards will have varying ramifications on residential and non-residential projects.

Though we appreciated the opportunity to participate in the process, in the end we weren't able to fully support the new Belton Design Standards for a handful of reasons.  As we noted in correspondence to Belton leadership, we believe government could and should strive to maintain the character of its City, to control potential blight, and to protect its natural resources.  TABA continues to subscribe to the philosophy that government should not try to control personal taste and choice through regulation.  For these reasons, we worked hard with Belton to try and reach agreement on numerous items in a document that will have a substantial impact on our local builders and developers.

The document can be viewed in its entirety at
http://ci.belton.tx.us/DocumentView.aspx?DID=292 .  Based on information received at the last Council meeting on the subject, I can report the following as it pertains to the final items we tried to get worked out toward the end of the process.

Concerning the masonry provisions in the document, it was reported that stucco had been included with brick and stone as an allowable material and that an appendix had been created for “alternative compliance materials.”  Pictures of allowable alternatives that have been presented by staff in the past have revealed a tolerance for materials that won’t be permitted by right, including high percentage concrete fiber board (think Hardi) homes.  Unfortunately this type of material will require approval from staff prior to its residential use in Belton.  We’ve advocated that this particular product (and others) be allowed by right from the very beginning.  We believe it should be approved by right due to its durability, warranty and the extent of its current use in the area.

Throughout the process, we've noted our level of discomfort with provisions on what are to be called "Belton Heritage Trees."  Trees that receive this designation in Belton won't even be able to be pruned without a permit.  During the meeting, it was noted that Belton provided a more thorough definition of “Belton Heritage Trees” and that the types of trees considered for this status will be greater than 30 inches in diameter and will be “pristine and picturesque.”  That is helpful, but we at no point indicated a tolerance for the tree provisions and will just have to wait and see how that works out.  On trees, it has been our position all along that nobody understands and appreciates the value of desirable hardwood trees more than builders and we don’t believe the government needs to oversee this property rights issue.

The above are the most notable remaining items of concern that I presented in final testimony on the document.  In all, TABA managed to submit about 25 points of concern with the original draft, along with some recommendations on how they could be changed.  We thank the Belton leadership for working with us to resolve some of those issues throughout the process.  One of the final items they changed had to do with an issue we had raised with their proposed requirements requiring the use of landscape architects on certain projects.  In the end, Belton decided that a landscape architect will no longer be required to verify the plans or the development for residential applications.  Other items we reached some level of agreement on included provisions for screening, chimney stacks, residential landscaping and xeriscaping, roof pitch, and roof shingles.

I'm told that Belton is working on a booklet that will guide builders and developers through the new process and help ease the transition to understanding the new standards.  This will be added to the City of Belton website as it becomes available.

We want to thank the Membership Meetings & Sponsors Committee, chaired by Kelly Hosch of First Community Title for leading another successful TABA event.  The Reverse Raffle was great fun and the winners are smiling from ear to ear.  We want to give a big thank you to JR Lester of R and L Trucking who won this year's top prize - 2008 Chevy Colorado pickup.  He bid the last ticket and we truly appreciate his participation in this event.  We also want to thank top prize winners 2-4:

It's time to start thinking about the 2010 Home & Garden Show!!!  We are ready to begin the booking process.  In the near future, 2009 exhibitors will be mailed a packet of information about the 2010 Show.  New this year, we have made available a 3-year contract option.  This option will lock exhibitors into the 2010 price for 3 years and provide an upfront 10 percent discount on their booths.  We think this is a valuable option for those planning on exhibiting for the next 3 years so please read the information carefully.  If you have questions, please contact the TABA office at 254-773-0445.

The show will take place February 27 - 28, 2010 at the Bell County Expo Center.  The floorplan has basically remained the same with the exception of the center booth, which has been divided into 3 booths.  We also moved the Headquarters Booth down to the floor.  Two of the center booths are 10x30 and the third one is a 10x20.  The costs of these booths are slightly higher than all the others.  These booths will be sold on a first come first serve basis and are available only to TABA members so if you are interested please contact the TABA office immediately.

We are also planning to put a great deal of focus on the Friday night Preview Party as we hope to improve upon this event.  Please be watching for more information in upcoming newsletters.

For those members who wish to exhibit in the Show for the first time, please call the TABA office in October.  Open booking will begin at this time.  New exhibitors will not be assigned a booth until after the September 30th in order to give our past exhibitors time to book what they had last year.  We thank you for your patience and we encourage you to exhibit in this show.  We have approxiamately 5,000 people attend this show over the course of 3 days.  Can you get that many people in your showroom in 3 days?

Please keep reading future On The Level Newsletters for more information regarding the 2010 Home & Garden Show.
